Brick Paint Removal & Brick Pointing Restoration in Tooting

Completed 10.04.2025

This charming period home in Tooting had been previously coated with thick masonry paint that dulled its character and trapped moisture in the brickwork. The homeowner contacted SJ Pointer Brick Restoration to restore the original brick facade and give the property a fresh, authentic look.

Our brief was simple

Before

Thick white paint concealing original brick texture
Signs of moisture retention and poor breathability

After

Warm, original London stock bricks revealed. All joints restored with hand-tooled lime mortar pointing

During

We started by testing small areas to assess the type of paint and the best removal method. After determining a safe approach, we used a combination of chemical softeners and steam cleaning to lift the paint without damaging the brick surface.

After paint removal, we turned our attention to preparing the brickwork for repointing. The old, damaged cement mortar was carefully cut out by hand to a suitable depth. This step is crucial—it ensures that the new lime mortar will bond properly and last for decades. We used dust-controlled tools and hand chisels to avoid damaging the surrounding bricks.

With the paint fully removed and the original brickwork beautifully repointed using breathable lime mortar, the Tooting property was completely transformed. The home regained its historic charm, and more importantly, the bricks and mortar were now able to “breathe” properly—reducing moisture retention and improving the long-term health of the facade.

To finish the job, we applied our certified Storm Dry brick protection treatment. Storm Dry is a BBA-approved breathable water repellent that penetrates deep into the brick surface, offering long-term protection against rain and damp without sealing the wall in. Unlike film-forming coatings, it allows trapped moisture to escape while keeping new water out—making it the ideal finish for historic brickwork.
